My favorite discovery excercises were the ones where we made an avatar... and the ones where we explored flickr.
The program has extended the toolbox that I can reach into to retrive information. The diverse range of information and search techniques will help improve lifelong learning.
The program accomplished what I expected of it... I wish that it was not as time consuming to get into.. and each one would have a podcast of less than 10 minutes which explains everything step by step... and allowed free time to experiment.. instead of learning soley through the reading... and struggling through the experimentation.
My learning through this program has been benificial. I got to try different things such as podcasts that I had read about.. and saw.. but didnt want to download to my computer.. Web 2.0 in my oppinion is flawed... but this experience has changed my mind to a point where I feel more comfortable using it.

Week 9 Thing 22
Overdrive is a novel concept... however.. not having a Windows PC(which is the only thing DRM supports since Microsoft can sort of control it) at home... or a DRM enabled mp3 player.... (Nor wanting either)... it is pointless since I could not listen to the DRM encrypted files without first breaking through the security... I do not believe its worth the hassel to listen to any DRM enabled book or music...
Music and books, like knowledge, are free to be shared and modified amoungst others. Where would Wierd Al be if DRM was out when he hit the stage? Take off the restrictions for checking out.. and remove the DRM.. and Overdrive just might be feasible.

Week 9 Thing 21
Podcast feed added to bloglines...
I learned of a few good podcast search sites that covered a large variety of differnet podcasts.

Week 9 Thing 20
I have to say... of all the video's that I have seen on YouTube... this is my all time favorite..
Week 8 Thing 19
I tried the games2web.com site.... and I think it is horrible... its basically a collection of flash games... ridden with advertisements... and a poor selection of games to play... not any type of web 2.0 site...
Week 8 Thing 18
I dislike the online word documents for three reasons.
One, privacy... anyone has the possibility of stealing all your ideas or works since you keep it on a public server.
Two, accessability... if the server goes down.. you loose access to all your documents...
Three, features.... although they have a decent set of features currently... there are plenty more to be added that can already be found on desktop installed Office Suites.

Week 7 Thing 17
Nothing new... extremely simple... I am not a big wiki fan... I love editing pages by HTML instead of digital text via XML...
Week 7 Thing 16
A library could make excellent use of wikis as a peer-reviewed book list... Organization of books and materials based on genre, evoked emotions, endings... ect...

Week 6 Thing 15
To a temporary place in time....
Some of the topics mention seem far out... yet... they also seem to appear that the topics are attainable... Library 3.0 makes me think of "The Time Machine" by H.G. Wells movie adaptation of 2002.... When the time traveler first hops forward in time to a future... In the book... he was arrested for illegal time travel... but in the movie... it showed our future society which blew up the moon... However... the movie takes us into a library with a digital hologram librarian... everything that librarian did, can be replicated even today... the question is... how soon will that kind of technology come out?
I think Library 4.0 is blissful... but... I hope that the strategic goals of libraries can make this seemingly perfect exsistance into a reality for everyone.

Week 6 Thing 14
The results from the three searches were different. They gave a wide variety of different blogs from looking at different blogs, tags, and directories.
I think that tagging will be more effective than search engines since people of different localities can find all relevant information on topics they choose, and different aspects of the subject they are looking for.

Week 6 Thing 13
Del.icio.us appears to be a useful tool for finding new information quickly, bookmarks can appear within minutes of a new page being posted. A limitation that search engines have is that they have to constantly search for new pages, and it could take hours or days to actually return a result.
I love the way that you can search for related subjects by the tagged lines. It makes searching very useful. I think that anywhere bookmark idea for this is not ideal for everyone. Although it is useful, I do not use bookmarks personally since anything important enough to bookmark is memorized. It is nice though to find a few groups that have similar interests as yourself and that find new relevant information quickly.

Week 5 Thing 12
RollYo has a great potential for educational resources to distribute to people due to limiting the number of sites searched to a few trusted sites that can be approved for the target audience. You will not get a search result pointing to buying this product when you are looking for information on how to fix a different product that you own.
This rollyo is a simple search through a few gamming and pc news sites.

Week 5 Thing 11
Library Thing is a great resource if you want peer reviews and book discussions with other people. Everything is neatly organized and easy to use. A wide variety of books are able to be added and library thing seems to be a nice resource for that next 'great' read.

Week 5 Thing 10

Its almost like looking in a mirror at home!!!
I found the Meez avatar generator(http://www.meez.com/) the easiest one with the most features. A wide selection of characters and customizations to suite anyones heart. A few of the fancier items require points that are earned by referring friends to the meez website.

Week 4 Thing 9
My favorite search tool was Feedster. Everything is presentable along with interesting feeds shown that do not have to be searched for. Managing what you see in another person's blog or a company's feed is also useful. The purpose of this feature is to only find reviews by consumers instead of the non-sence that companies might put out to intice consumers into purchasing items (or vice versa).
Week 4 Thing 8
RSS feeds are highly useful for keeping track of stories that have already been read as well as organizing news to see what is useful.
The library could utuilize the features of RSS feeds to provide specific age groups topics that relate to them. These topics could be things like upcoming children story readings, a guest author visiting, new books, book reviews that patrons can comment on, alerts for county emergencies, and many more spefic feeds that offer a very specific focus for those groups and a broader one to summarize what the library believes is important.

Week 3 Thing 7
The open source movement is the concept of sharing developing or developed code for programs. One of the main advantages to this technological movement is helping other programmers or enthusiasts to develop programs of their own or to contribute back to the project by adding additional features, fixing bugs in the original code, and further speeding up the development process with little overlap in coding.
Chances are you currently have in your possession an item that contains open source code. It could be the cell phone you have on your waist or in your pocket, or the computer you are viewing this page on. The most common open source program that you use, sometimes without even knowing, is Java. It is found in car radios, navigation systems, cell phones, pda's, camera's, robotic pets, and of course, your computer.
With this open source movement, programs can be developed faster and more efficiently without the hassels of the failing and outdated US Patent system. Credit is given to the developers and an outstanding product is produced with a high compatibility with most systems.
Most notable of the open source movement for me, is the developing game engine sharing through open sourcing of code. iD Software is a company that develops game engines and after making some profit from the game titles produced by the engine, release the source code to further advancements on the engine and to give ideas to the game engine designers on what to include and ways to include ideas.
Most open source programs include a license usually called the GPL ( General Public License) which protects people from using the code unless they adbide by the license. The main clauses are that any programs developed from the source of another will also be released under the same (or updated) license of the GPL as well as being open source to give back code that has been developed.
With the open source movement, more computer platforms ( Macintosh, Linux, and... windows ) are gaining a wide selection of programs which work on the three major computer operating systems.
Open source programming is one of the primary reasons why corperate compeditors include more features and a better user interface for new programs, so that there is competition in the computer software market. Otherwise, the only word you would know in life would be Microsoft. It has also lowered some prices on software and forced corperate developers to create a better and more stable program that includes the features that are now included.

Week 3 Thing 6
Flickr Color Pickr was an interesting tool. Very beautiful, vibrantly colored photographs can easily be found. The simplicity of the tools usage was a great benifit since it would allow a person to find something that interests them in the person's current mood, or to find something that displays a favorite color in the most amazing, profound way.
As a personal preference, I love aquamarine colors ( sea blue, torquoise, light green, sky blue) and found the following image created through photoshop that resembles a dragon fly's wing in stained glass.

Both pictures are extremely limited in what they show, yet, there is so much to be seen within each one. How the hues of the color change, the ripples of the waves against the boat and the anchor line, the little sea spray caressing the crest of the waves.
These fine details are brought out by the solid color theme that the Flickr Color Pickr found. Mashed tools have a very useful purpose when it comes to expanding features of an already good product to make it a great product.

Week One Thing One
As we approach an uncertain but exciting future where cars no longer have steering wheels and everything can be accomplished by short simplified tasks. How will the current lifestyle of those we know and ourselves be changed?
An increasing number of people are feeling more confortable using computers to stay in contact with friends, family, school mates, and co-workers. Blogs have helped to put the users in control of what happens, no longer in the hands of those who seek to limit speech online.
I am looking forward to how the library will integrate this new technology and how our patrons will react to the upcomming changes both in the library and around us all.

7 1/2 Things
Habbit's 3 and 4 are tied for the lead as the easiest for me, both are tasks which have been embedded into me since before I could consciously recollect any thing.
The hardest habbit though is setting goals. I have vague ideas of what I want to do in my lifetime, but any goals that I set for myself, I nearly always immediatly go to work to achieve that goal. I think in order to overcome this difficulty, would be to face the reality of life and to 'settle down' into the normal order which is not a particularly good task in my oppinion.
Lifelong learning always has taken place, due the the dynamic nature of the world and has accelerated itself in our current time period due to the rapid evolution of technology and information that can be shared. How one selects what to learn and the ammount one can learn in a lifetime cannot be compared to anothers since everyone's experiences are unique unto themselves.
